With Mayor Regalado’s recent support of Swire Properties’ Brickell CitiCentre skyscraper complex, the Brickell area is set to receive thousands of incoming jobs and improvements to Eighth Street Metromover Station. The station, located within the parcel of land allotted to the CitiCentre project, will receive an under-the-line landscaping overhaul between Sixth and Eighth Streets and the addition of two overhead pedestrian crossings running across South Miami Avenue and Southeast Seventh Street. The work will act to improve the connection between Brickell CitiCentre and the Metromover station.
According to property developer Swire Properties, the Metromover upgrades will help transform the Brickell area into a safer and more accessible environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit users. Stephen Owens, president of Swire commented that, “Brickell CitiCentre will be a game-changer for downtown Miami, enhancing its emergence as a vibrant urban core,” he continued. “The project will bring significant retail opportunities to the area and activate our streets with a pedestrian-friendly experience.”
Along with the nearly 4,000 jobs, businesses, and income the project will bring to Miami’s economy, there also comes a means of easy transportation around downtown Miami and Brickell with the expansion of Miami’s fledgling trolley line to include a Biscayne-Brickell trolley route that runs along the Brickell/Biscayne Corridor between Southwest 26th Road and Northeast 17th Terrace. The ride is free at least through March of 2013. The addition of the new trolley system in Miami is credited with distinguishing the city as the eighth best American city for public transportation, according to Walk Score.
Alyce Robertson, executive director of the Miami Downtown Development Authority concludes that, “With these Metromover upgrades, Brickell CitiCentre is slated to become another anchor for Downtown’s thriving Brickell Financial District, enhancing the neighborhood’s 24/7 appeal among residents, businesses and visitors.”
