David Beckham’s Grand Stadium Promises to be a Great Neighbor

Tim Leiweke, a Miami Beckham United representative, presented David Beckham’s company’s plan for a new soccer stadium in Miami.

The primary focus of the design is making it pedestrian and mass transit friendly. The plan entails no parking garage. There are, however, about 7,000 existing parking spaces in the area.

The estimated cost to built such a massive stadium is $220 million. A new financial sponsor may be revealed soon to help cover some of the expense.

The stadium will seat about 25,000 spectators and will include a spectator’s roof. The field, however, will be open-air, allowing for natural grounds. Beckham’s secondary goal is to make the stadium Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified, meaning it will meet high environmental standards.

Beckham did not ask for any government or CRA subsidies and will therefore pay taxes on his property.

The design does not accommodate retail or restaurant venues. Leiweke explains that Miami’s shopping and restaurant scene is sufficient enough, and that they want the surrounding area to benefit economically from their presence.
