Once again, Miami is buzzing with the excitement of Miami Art Week, as the global art and design world gather together right here in our fair city for some of the biggest art and design events in the world. For many of us, particularly those of us with a penchant for decorating our spaces with unique and hard to find collectibles, the highlight of Miami Art Week is the arrival of Design Miami.
As the fair returns to its home in South Beach for its 20th edition, the world’s top design galleries will showcase heart-stopping collections of furniture, lighting, and art objects. A gathering place for everything and everyone related to the world of design, the fair also offers lectures, panel discussions, and networking sessions that explore all facets of design, such as architecture, film, music, and fashion.
— Design Miami Schedule of Events
Design Miami displays objects that are influenced by and reflective of their cultural identity and heritage, their historical and social milieu, and the materials available to artists and artisans in each context. Showcasing the beauty and majesty in the objects that we use to fulfill various functions in our daily lives, the exhibitions highlight how beautiful design objects become a part of our personal identities and histories, as these objects acquire meaning, significance, and symbolism over time. And most importantly, offer you the opportunity to add new pieces to your collections and homes, and learn about new artists and designers.

Presenting its 20th Edition in Miami Beach, Design Miami opens under the curatorial leadership of this year’s Curatorial Director, Glenn Adamson, and the 2024 ‘Blue Sky’ theme, with over 45 international galleries showcasing contemporary and historic treasures that illustrate the concept of a ‘blue sky thinking’ optimistic approach to design.
Of his curatorial vision, Adamson reflected that “the Blue Sky curatorial theme felt only natural for this 20th edition of Design Miami. The theme presents an opportunity to celebrate Design Miami’s role as a platform for the 21st century avant-garde – showcasing the very best in contemporary and historic design for two decades. Design is inherently a speculative venture, and also a collective one – a shared framework of reference at a time of global interconnection. The same sky is above us all.”

The Blue Sky theme invites diversity, as well as bold leaps of imagination, thoughtful innovation with materials, and an inherent respect for the natural world that we all share under a single sky. Several thematic threads may be identified in the theme: The ‘blue sky thinking’ approach celebrates design as an essentially optimistic human activity, one that fosters radical invention through innovation with concepts and materials.
Among this year’s featured galleries is The Future Perfect (New York), with a curated exhibit of almost 100 new works from over 20 artists and designers, including New Delhi-based designer Vikram Goyal, who will be presenting work for the first time in the U.S. at Design Miami.
Charles Burnand Gallery (London) will showcase a celebration of futuristic thinking and a no-limits approach to creative expression, marked by a unique array of materials used by designers from around the globe. At its center, the exhibition features a giant lighting installation by Korean artist Heechan Kim, made from ash wood veneer and copper wire.
Southern Guild (Cape Town/Los Angeles) brings a focused exhibition of contemporary ceramics by 12 artists from Africa who explore the ancient origins of the ceramic arts, while showcasing progressive approaches to form, technique, function, and symbolism. The exhibit features furniture, sculpture, and other objects by leading ceramic artists.
Todd Merrill Studio (New York) will feature pieces from artists exclusive to the studio, including Draga & Aurel’s monumental resin cabinet and dining table, part of their Flare Series. Markus Haase’s handcarved, cast and sculpted Aluminum Circlet LED light sculpture capture and reflect light while seemingly defying gravity. Other pieces, including sculptural sofas from John Procario, a pair of one-of-a-kind upholstered chairs by Erik Speer, inspired by oceanic forms, and colorful totems of illuminated hand-blown glass globes, some layered with 23K gold, by Jamie Harris.
For anyone who wants to enhance their home décor or furniture collection with the most unique design objects available in the world, Design Miami is the perfect destination.
