Apr 18, 2017 April 18, 2017
The temperatures are picking up and it’s time to lather on the sun tan and cool off with some awesome events around town. Here’s our pick of the hippest festivals in Miami to make for a magnificent May:
SunFest Music and Arts Festival ~ May 3-7
West Palm Beach
Five days of music mania returns to West Palm Beach in all its glory. There will be 3 stages and 50 bands to keep you rocking to the beat and into the weekend. This year’s exciting lineup includes Blink 182, Flo Rida, Snoop Dogg, Sunghosts, Tayla Parx, Ambrosia, Magic City Hippies, Ryan McKenzie, Joe Galaxy, Lillie Mae, Battle of the Bands winner Rocket to Anywhere and more.
A first this year, there will be a revamped Art District – so no more juried art shows. Instead, there will be interactive installations, live artist demos, and a collection of jewelry to sculptures from 60 artists and vendors at the ‘Shop’. Also, expect floating bars, a ChillZone, great eats and fireworks on closing night!
It’s time to tip your sombreros (and tequilas) to the Mexican army’s victory over France in 1862. The biggest drinking block party north of the border will hit Mary Brickell Village, complete with sombreros, mustaches, premium Margaritas, Mexican beer, tequila shots, DJs, mariachi bands, an 8-foot piñata and more.
There’s also an honorary Cinco de Mayo Crawl taking place at Wynwood for those who’d like a celebration closer home.
Brew at the Zoo ~ May 6
Zoo Miami, South Miami Heights
Who says the Zoo can only be a kid-friendly zone? With the Annual New Times’ Brew at the Zoo taking over Zoo Miami, adults will rediscover child-like wonder. Sample more than 100 local, international and craft beers with some amazing food and live music. Just make sure to have your resident encounters before you hit the brews. A part of the ticket proceeds will benefit Zoo Conservation.

Go ahead and explore the Miami Beach Golf Club or mingle with golfers there for a great cause. The Hospitality Open Golf Tournament begins with a continental breakfast, followed by a luncheon, awards, auction, raffle and drawings. All proceeds go towards funding scholarships for African heritage men and women, who will be working in the local visitor industry post graduation.
Caribbean Market Day ~ May 13
Little Haiti Cultural Complex
Spend the day browsing through original Afro-Caribbean fashion, jewelry, shoes, accessories, beauty products, homeware, arts, music, books and everything you can find under the sun (quite literally). Also, make sure to have your fill of authentic local Caribbean food and Afro-Caribbean entertainment for a complete experience.
Mother’s Day ~ May 14

Not impressed by the regular brunch? Treat her to an Intro to Kundalini with Ganesha, a Concert at the Deering Estate, or a Mother’s Day Experience featuring K. Michelle at the James L. Knight Center. Better still, you could book her a Mother’s Day spa package at the Fontainebleau or Acqualina Resort & Spa.
Not a morning person? Take her to The Great Gatsby Mother’s Day Gala in Miramar or a luxurious Mother’s Day Dinner Cruise by the South Beach Lady Charters. You could even send mommy for a week’s escape with this Brunch & Carnival Cruise. And, if all else fails, some quiet time with her favorite box of chocolates or wine should do the trick.
Redland International Orchid Show ~ May 19-21
Redland Fruit & Spice Park
Heads-up nature lovers, the largest annual orchid show in the country is back! Along with mesmerizing floral beauties for show and sale, will be lectures, raffles and an assortment of scrumptious treats from around the world for a spectacularly fragrant weekend.
