Out of the Kitchen! The Best Condos with Pickleball and Padel Courts in Miami
May 24, 2024 May 24, 2024
Miami is known for its riveting blend of cultures, active lifestyles, a deep love of sport, and for embracing the curated and curious. Nothing sums up this concept more than the growing popularity of padel and pickleball. At this point, you’re probably either saying, “Yes! I love playing them both,” or “A what ball? A cucumber and gherkin game? What the hell are you talking about?”
Truth is pickleball has taken America by storm. It’s the fastest growing sport in the U.S. for the fifth consecutive year in a row, after being created near Seattle in 1965. And padel has long been a community racquet sport in Europe, after the first official courts opened in Marbella, Spain in 1974 (but it was created by Mexican Enrique Corcuera in 1969). And we can attest to the fun and addictive nature of both of these petite iterations of tennis—several members of our top Miami real estate brokerage play padel and pickleball! (Call us if you want advice on where to play!) Miami even has a professional padel league, Miami PC!
It’s no wonder then that Miami developers have taken notice and are creating amazing, new Miami condos with pickleball courts and padel courts. Give the people what they want! And with their smaller courts, these luxury amenities take much less space than a tennis court. So whatever understanding you have of these two sports, from a “pickler” to a vibora pro, the fact is these two sports are in demand—from growing local clubs to them becoming the hottest new condo amenity.
For the uninitiated, let’s have a quick recap.
— The Miami Pickleball and Padel Craze
We start by taking a trip back to 1969 in Mexico, where a brilliant mind named Enrique Corcuera was cooking up something special. That's right; it's the birth of padel—a sport which can best be described as the baby of tennis and squash, but this baby plays by its own rules. It inherited many genes from both its parents, where you hit the ball over a net, use the same scoring system as tennis, and utilize the back wall as long as the ball only bounces once.
On the other hand, pickleball is like padel’s half-brother/sister, whereby tennis cheated on squash and had a baby with ping pong and badminton (plus some shuffleboard thrown in). The sport is played on a court around ¼ the size of a tennis court, with a slightly smaller tennis net, and has an “off-limits” area close to the net called “the kitchen” (borrowed from shuffleboard, functions same as badminton). Just like in any busy household, you don’t want to spend too long in the kitchen or else you’ll get penalized. And no volleys in the kitchen! Just as with padel, the familial ties are obvious—each point starts with an underarm serve, the ball has to bounce once, and the scoring system is the same as ping pong.
So, why are these two sports causing such a stir in the city, and why are there so many new Miami condos with pickleball courts or padel courts? Well, for starters, they're two of the fastest-growing sports in the world right now. This is mainly due to the 2020 pandemic, as people found ample free time for smaller activities, and crucially, both sports don’t require physical contact or immense space.
With regard to Miami specifically, there are tons of parks (Haulover Park and Polo Park, to name a couple) that have accommodated space for both sports, and there are even clubs dedicated to them with more padel courts coming our way. If you’re looking for padel clubs in Miami, check out Wynwood Padel Club, Real Padel Miami, and Ultra Padel Miami. For pickleball, lots of public parks in Miami have courts if you want to check it out.
Now, we’ve played some nice groundstrokes and are back on serve, so we’re ready to tell you how get all of this fun at home! If you’re considering investing in or buying a new, pre-construction condo in Miami, why not choose one with its own padel or pickleball court? It's the perfect way to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy the glorious Miami weather.
In the next section, we'll take a look at some of the best luxury condo buildings with pickleball courts in Miami, so you can find the perfect place to call home.
