Potential Expansions to Wynwood Moving through its Plans

The Wynwood Business Improvement District (BID) is attempting to expand their boundaries, and also include more properties that are within its area already.
If BID is successful, 130 new businesses could join. “It’s not going to happen overnight,” Albert Garcia, director of BID and chief operating officer of Mega Shoes said, “We are reaching out to owners who were not included in the first round but want to have the services.”
When BID became an organization in 2012, owners voted to pay more in taxes, but would be included in their services. Back then, it was a huge “if.” Now it is applauded as a success and Garcia feels “that this is the time to expand.”
In order for the expansion to receive approval, 51% or more of the proposed new owners must be in favor of it. Next, being viewed as a formality, the Miami City Commission must amend the district’s enabling ordinance.
Currently, the district includes 50 square blocks ranging north-to-south from Northwest 20th Street to Northwest 29th Street, and east-to-west from North Miami Avenue to Northwest Fifth Avenue. The plan would increase the west boundary to Northwest Sixth Avenue and the east boundary to the Florida East Coast Railway tracks.
