Commissioners for Miami-Dade have all agreed to approve All Aboard Florida's plan to create a rail terminal in downtown Miami.
Jose Gonzalez, a representative of All Aboard Florida, said that the station's ceremonial ground-breaking is set to happen in September. Work on the site will begin in August, beginning with the destruction of many parking spaces to make room for the project.
The hearing to approve the project lasted only 10 minutes, and mainly consisted of commissioners thanking and showing approval to the company. As a gesture of gratitude, commissioners were invited to attend the ceremony for the breaking of the ground.
Miami officials have also been allowed to give suggestions to the design of the station. These officials were also part of the unanimous approval of the project.
The first phase of the station will cost developers approximately $150 million, and will consist of station and retail space. However, plans for the future include office, hotel, and residential space.
