Although the City of Miami Beach council is still not decided on the exact design of the West Avenue Bridge, the new low-level bridge over Collins Canal is already finding favor amongst South Beach condo residents due to its convenience. A direct route from South Beach to Sunset Harbour that allows you to ditch the congested Alton Road definitely sounds like a good idea.
The option to exercise an easement on a triangular patch of land that lies north of 17th Street and the Collins Canal led to a vote in April, which put the land in the hands of the City of Miami Beach instead of bidders looking to develop the land. And, though the work on the much anticipated bridge might not begin until two years from now, it has quite a few sold on the idea.
Those in favor of the West Avenue Bridge say that it has already become a necessity, given the new city parking garage as well as the restaurant and retail boom in the area. However, the handful of West Avenue residents against it fears that the addition might end up attracting more traffic into the neighborhood, especially from the already congested Alton Road. But, it seems like a 6-1 vote from the Miami Beach City Commissioners might point to the fact that the bridge might just be a good act of judgment.
The areas to benefit most from the West Avenue bridge include Collins Park, Belle Isle, lower West Avenue, lower North Bay Road, and of course, Sunset Harbour. A few examples of South Beach properties that can look forward to benefitting from the decision include Capri, Flamingo South Beach, Sunset Harbour, Waverly, Mondrian South Beach and many more. It’s being touted that the 55 foot long, West Avenue Bridge is to feature 10’ sidewalks, bike lanes, north and south-bound travel lanes along with turn lanes; something that might interest South Beach condo residents as a healthier way of getting around town.
