What Miami Will Look Like in the Future

Nov 25, 2013 November 25, 2013

Due to heavy investment, the city of Miami is on the fast track for rapid growth. Billions of dollars have already been poured into the city with projects planned out to the year 2020. A number of those projects have already broken ground with others scheduled soon to follow. While many of those projects are luxury projects, a large percentage of the new projects planned for Miami actually focus on mobility. Whether it is the transportation of people or goods, these new projects have the potential to make a significant difference in the future of Miami while poising the city for tremendous economic growth.

One of those projects is the Miami Port. Currently, the port serves as the third busiest port in the country. Last year alone, goods valued at approximately $162 billion either entered or exited the United States through the two U.S. Customs districts in Florida. Dredge work has already begun in the Miami port in preparation for the massive ships that will begin making their way through the Panama Canal once expansion work there is finished in 2015. Although the deep dredge in the Miami port will take approximately 18 months to complete, the dividends it will reap will pay off well into the future. Coming in at a price tag of $220 million, the dredge will be completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in order to deepen the harbor to a depth of 50 feet. This will make the port able to handle the much larger Post-Panamax ships that will be capable of transporting up to three times the load capacity of standard freighters. After the Panama Canal literally doubles its capacity, the Port of Miami will have the potential to also vastly expand its exports while at the same time taking advance of lower costs.

The planned development of Miami's new futuristic airport will also have a tremendous impact on the city as well as the region. Miami International Airport currently ranks first in terms of international freight and second in international passengers out of all airports in the country. Florida is already the number one travel destination in the world with approximately 90 million visitors making their way to the Sunshine State in 2012. Of that number, around 45 percent were international visitors.

The distinctly futuristic plans for the Miami International Airport would include a four-star hotel, swimming pool, people mover, business center and even a pet spa. Under a unique agreement with a private developer, Odebrecht, USA, the city of Miami would not have to pay a single penny to construct the new project. The $512 million project would be financed by Odebrecht, who would in return run the facilities for the next 50 years while paying rent as well as a percentage of profits to the county. The new project will include three different components. A multi-million dollar business center will feature a meeting space, corporate offices, hotel, and a station for the MIA Mover train. In the hospitality center, there will be a 4-star hotel as well as dining and meeting space. The convenience center will feature ample space for services such as a dry cleaner, gas station, convenience store, and pet spa.
