Miami Becomes Hub for World Cup Travelers

by Sep Niakan | April 24, 2014

Miami International Airport, abbreviated MIA, will be accepting an additional 50,000 travelers this summer, due to the FIFA World Cup.

“If we get as many extra people as we anticipate,” Emilio González, Director of MIA said, “we need to be ready to accommodate them,” González brags that MIA will be the “Gateway to Brazil,” and he has started putting soccer balls on his emails and business cards in anticipation.

Miami International Airport has air connections to 10 out of the 12 Brazilian host cities, and will get the most World Cup traffic out of any city outside Brazil. However, Miami tourism officials want to lure soccer fans to stay a few days in Miami or use the city as their World Cup headquarters.

For instance, American Airlines offers passengers flying to Brazil to land in Miami for 48 hours before continuing to Brazil without any extra charges.
