Miami’s Fledgling Trolley System Adds Downtown, Midtown Routes

by Sep Niakan | July 22, 2013

With the orange and green trolleys already traversing the Health District, Marlins Park, and Overtown, it didn’t take long for Miami’s fledging system of trolleys to reach other Miami spots including the Financial District, Mary Brickell Village, Brickell Key, and other destinations throughout midtown, downtown, and the Design District. The free-to-ride public transportation service began servicing the Downtown and Brickell areas on May 1, encompassing two routes: one extending southward from Brickell Key to the Brickell Metrorail Station and Mercy Hospital and the other routing north from the Brickell Metrorail Station to the Design District.

The enhanced convenience of the trolley lines has increased pedestrian traffic in the Brickell and Downtown Miami areas, positively impacting the local economies and helped cement Miami as one of the nation’s top ten most walkable cities, as judged by Walk Score’s list of American cities with excellent public transit systems. The new honor will no doubt attract even more attention to the Brickell District from tourists looking to scratch their itch for the best of the Miami lifestyle, to potential property buyers looking to be in the thick of one of the country’s most useful public transportation systems.

In addition to stops at Metromover and Metrorail stations along the new route, the new Brickell/Downtown line makes stops at places of interest such as the Miami Convention Center, Freedom Tower, Bayside, Mercy Hospital, Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, and Bayfront Park, to name a few. And development of the line hasn’t stopped here. Current plans call for further route additions in early 2014 extending to Northwest 20th Street from Northwest 27th Avenue to the Omni area, and on Coral Way from Southwest 37th Avenue to Brickell Drive.
