Miami and Dade Commissioners in Opposition to New Signature Bridge

As the design and concept for the new signature bridge in Miami is coming to construction, some city officials are in opposition.
Francis Suarez, Miami Commissioner, believes that the $600 million that has funded the new bridge could be diverted to a tunnel, and even build a train between Miami and Miami Beach. He believes that would be a better plan than the current one.
Xavier Suarez, Francis’ father and the Dade Commissioner, is also in opposition to the bridge. As recently as 2014, Xavier recommended that the roadway should be moved underground in order to remove the frustration that the bridge would cause; having a highway cut through downtown. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) overruled that suggestion and disregarded it.
Some politicians in Miami are worried about cancelling the bridge, since they fear the money that was used to fund the bridge would be moved elsewhere.
The bridge itself is already funded, and has been in the works for a few years. Also notable, some officials in Miami sued the state when FDOT considered replacing the bridge design they suggested with a less expensive design.
