$21 Million Gets I-95 A New Sculpture In New Public Benefits Deal

Janet Echelman, a local sculptor, will be adorning the I-95 Bridge in downtown Miami with new artwork.

Chetrit Group, a developer, is planning to add the artwork to the bridge as part of a $21 million investment in public benefits to the Miami River District. According to the Miami 21 zoning codes, any developer who contributes to the public benefits are allowed to develop taller and denser projects than is typically allowed.

Echelman uses many atypical materials, such as fishnets, in order to design her sculptures. She has installed many in different cities including Amsterdam, Vancouver, and Phoenix.

At their most recent meeting, the Miami River Commission looked over the plans for the sculpture, and is passing it onto the Department of Cultural Affairs in Dade for review.
