PortMiami Demolishes and Revamps Outdated Warehouses

PortMiami plans to tear down and refashion several of their warehouses. This change was brought on by the Panama Canal’s expansion, which caused greater cargo loads, and in turn caused the need to acquire more room on PortMiami’s land.

“Nearly every warehouse is destined to be knocked down and relocated in the next five years,” assistant port director Kevin Lynskey said. He also added that there are no priorities, but almost all of them will be removed and refurbished.

Many warehouses have different purposes, from a refrigerated warehouse, to customs, to a marine spill building. Each warehouse had its own use, but also has its own reason for being torn down. For instance, the refrigerated warehouse is no longer used for what it was designed for, due to the invention and popularity of refrigerated shipping containers. Also, the customs buildings were obsoleted with other modern means, and the marine spill building has six times as much space as it needs.

Still, what it all really comes down to, is space. There is too much unused space in the warehouses in PortMiami, and they are planning to fix that by renovating the area.
