The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently gave approval for the SkyRise Miami “bobby pin” lookout tower to be built at 1,049 feet above sea level.
SkyRise Miami has been caught in the red tape for a while, originally being planned for 1,000 feet back in 2008. The FAA had stricter rules back then, but under new height restrictions, some towers in Miami have been approved at 1,049 feet above sea level, which is the maximum height.
The SkyRise is under an interesting situation, tying for the tallest tower in Miami above sea level, but ranking first above ground. Since the SkyRise is so close to the water, it only stands four feet above sea level at its base. In other words, the SkyRise tower is 1,045 feet above ground, where the next tallest above ground is the PMG condo tower at 1,041 feet above ground. PMG is located at 300 Biscayne Boulevard.
