A Brief History of Edgewater, Miami

The shimmering shores of Edgewater have seen their fair share of transformation. From the 1920s to 1960s, the southern part of the neighborhood was known as a high-end shopping district, with national retailers such as Sears, Burdines, and Jordan Marsh setting up shop. 1977 marked the debut of the Omni International Mall on Biscayne Boulevard, which included luxury retail brands like Givenchy, Hermes, and Emilio Pucci, replacing most street retailers.

However, by the 1990s, the Omni mall started to lose its luster to the likes of Aventura, Dadeland, and Sawgrass Mills shopping malls, which ultimately led to its closing in 2000. And as the retail left, other parts suffered, too. Margaret Pace Park was once considered a dangerous part of town; home to unsavory types, drug dealers and the homeless.

Fast forward to the late 2000s and early 2010s, and Edgewater, Miami emerged as the brand new favorite Miami neighborhood for national and international investors, seeing its waterfront value and proximity to the best of the Magic City. Plans for new developments began and the neighborhood went vertical, not only in terms of pricing, but also with its influx of highrise condos and new luxury developments.

Today, Edgewater is one of Miami’s trendiest neighborhoods, complete with breathtaking bay views, 8 acres of parks that are dog- and child-friendly, plenty of retail choices for daily necessities, brand-new luxury condos, and minutes from the best of Miami.
